Ann Marie Veronica Dion Corcoran, surrounded by family, peacefully passed away on May 25, 2025, at the age of 80. Ann was born in Manhattan, New York to Mary and Gordon Dion as the youngest of her 5 siblings. She met her husband John at a work picnic, and they remained friends while he served in the Army, and she attended snowy St. Anselm College.
In 1968, she graduated with a BS in Nursing. That same year they married and embarked on their 58-year adventure. In 1976, happy to leave the cold of the northeast, they settled in Greensboro to build their family and purposeful lives together. She was an active parishioner at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for 48 years. Ann was a dedicated mother of four and grandmother to nine. Working throughout her life as a Registered Nurse, she retired from Greensboro Ophthalmology.
True to her nursing profession, Ann was a consummate helper who enjoyed volunteering and was a consistent presence with Meals on Wheels. She responded to calls from family or friends with minor and major medical questions with aplomb and, if the situation called for it, responded after careful research in her reference books. Her inquisitive nature led to a lifetime of learning and educating. Her family often received envelopes stuffed with articles on parenting, healthcare or a particularly good recipe. The only family member with a green thumb, her family will attempt to keep her beautiful garden thriving.
Ann was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 20 years ago, despite this diagnosis, she had a very active life filled with travel, family and friends. Ann never sat still and was constantly working on several projects at once. She credited her quality of life to faith, connection with her husband, friends and family, music (especially Elvis and the Bee Gees), healthy food (and a good dose of chocolate), exercise, determination and Irish joy. A fun, caring and devoted Grandmother, she was quick with a Tootsie pop or whimsical visit to the carousel. She enjoyed playing card and bingo games where she transferred her competitive spirit to the next generation. She loved hosting her grandchildren or attending their performances, athletic events and cheering their academic success.
She was preceded by her parents, Mary and Gordon Dion, her sister Patricia and brothers Edward and Gordon and survived by her sister Joan. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Kathleen (Alex and children, Eleanor and Stella), Maureen (James), Kevin (Linda and children Amelia, Sarah, Benjamin and Owen) and Sheila (Jason and children John Henry, Anna Jane and Liam).
The family is deeply appreciative of the researchers and medical professionals who focus on eliminating Parkinson's as well as the caregivers and hospice workers who helped Ann maintain her dignity, daily work routines and sense of humor in the final stages of her disease.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her honor to the St. Vincent de Paul Society (109 W Smith Street Greensboro, NC 27401) or the Parkinson's Foundation.
A Funeral Mass at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church will be Monday, July 21, at 11:00 am.
