Barbara Brewer Carroll, 88, known for her bright smile, kind words, outgoing personality, color coordinated outfits and warm hugs for everyone, passed away peacefully on May 21 at Friends Home West after a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Greensboro, Barbara was born to Hattie and Bob Barrier on November 3, 1934. She graduated from Greensboro Senior High School and attended Pfeiffer College, where she met Bill Brewer, her future husband and the love of her life. He predeceased her in 1976. Barbara was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and was very active in Presbyterian Women, receiving an Honorary Life Membership in recognition of her service. As a community volunteer, she managed the gift shop at Cone Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. After moving to Friends Home West, which she affectionately called “The Wild West”, she enjoyed volunteering in the library, helping organize the yearly book sale, and playing bridge, scrabble, and bingo. She took long walks with her walker, which she dubbed “Big Red” and loved visiting her friends and neighbors and sharing a glass of wine together. Barbara was predeceased by her two sisters, Brenda Strider and Becky Yelton. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Nault and Lydia Latta and her much loved sons-in-law, Lloyd Nault and Harold Latta. She took great pride and delight in being Ma-Maw to her grandchildren: Courtney Latta Sosebee (Seth), Katie Teel (Massey), Chris Nault, Emily Wilson (Evan) and Maggie Latta-Milord (Wilfrid), as well as her six great-grandchildren, Annabec, Lilah, Jack, Dylan, Alé, and Lily. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Mary Carroll Dickerson (Scott) and their daughters (Barbara’s goddaughters) Julie, Laura, and Lisa The family was overwhelmed by the love and care Barbara received in her final days and the opportunity to see the impact her long and caring life had on so many. Barbara felt that her life’s purpose was to spread joy. A joyful celebration of her life will be held at 2:30 on Sunday, June 4, 2023 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Viewing of the service will also be available through livestreaming, at westpreschurch.org.
