A private graveside service will be held at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
Bobbie was born October 15, 1932, in Fulton County, Georgia; daughter of the late James H. and Bertha Chambers Shirley. Bobbie studied Medical Technology and made it her career as an adult, working in a doctor’s office, at CDC in Atlanta, and at the Health Dept. in Greensboro, NC. She met Walter while he was attending GA Tech, married in 1952, and started their family right away. Walter’s job included being transferred to several states, so the whole family moved quite a bit. Later in life, Bobbie and Walter got to live in Paris and Germany for a couple of years due to Walter’s job with the government. The two of them also took many great vacations with family and friends over the years.
Growing up, Bobbie loved to draw and paint from the time she was quite young. As she grew older, she joined artist groups and continued her painting as long as she was able. She created dozens of paintings over the course of her life. Bobbie was a great mother and had a wonderful sense of humor, not to mention, a great baker and cook. She loved her family and friends more than anything and never met a stranger. While at Friends Homes West, in the nursing care unit, Barbara, as she was called there, was loved by the whole staff. She would roll down the hall in her wheelchair and visit with the staff just to say hello or recite her favorite poem she had written some years earlier, which of course made everyone laugh. Poetry was another one of Bobbie’s many gifts.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Knapp was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Knapp; sisters, Kat Griffin, Lillian Sneed, Louise Kite, Margie Ivie and Jackie Shirley. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy K. Boynton of Greensboro, Barbara “Lynne” Chamblee and her husband, Ken of Milton, NC, and her son, Chandler Knapp and his wife Cathy of Lewisville, NC; six grandchildren, Aaron Chamblee, Caitlyn Chamblee, Holly Redding and her husband Arthur, Casey Martin and her husband David, and Chandler Boynton and his wife Torrey, Lauren Boynton; three great grandchildren, Oliver and Winston Redding and Ellie Boynton. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Friends Homes West’s Doctor, Nursing staff and CNA’s, as well as, everyone who had a part in taking care of our mother. We also want to thank the staff from Hospice for being there to help assist our mother and the family during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Knapp’s memory may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.donate.lls.org or to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.
Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel is honored to assist the Knapp family with arrangements.
