On Wednesday September 15th, Benjamin Franklin Butler, Jr. went home to be with the Lord. A resident of Greensboro, “Al” as his “extended family” knew him, died peacefully in his sleep at Adams Farm Living Center.
Just three days short of his ninety-ninth birthday, Benjamin was born in Columbus County North Carolina to Benjamin F. Butler, Sr. and Annie Moore Hayes Butler on September 18th, 1911.
Al was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Blackwell Butler and his second wife Dorothy Dillon Butler; his half brother Clarence Hayes and half sister Roselea Hayes Susman. He is survived by his sister Lillie Butler Griffin of the Friends Home; several half nieces and nephews; and his “extended family” Jim, Connye, Brian and Christina Dillon of Jamestown and his “little buddy” Chi Chi;
Al was an Army veteran of World War II where he served honorably with the 63rd Infantry Division as a Staff Sergeant in Germany and Central Europe winning the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service, the EAMET Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, the American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. He was extremely proud of his service and was an active member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. A highlight of Al’s later years was his selection to go on the “Flight of Honor” from Greensboro to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.
Among Al’s favorite things were walks at the Mall with his wife “Dot” and watching NASCAR and Baseball with his extended family.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17th, at Glenwood Friends Church, 2400 Old Chapman Street, Greensboro, NC, with a Celebration of Al’s life to follow at 3:00 p.m. with the Reverend Tim Grant officiating. Interment will be at New Garden Cemetery.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Adams Farm Living Center for the kindness and concern that they showed Al during his time there.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Glenwood Friends Church, 2400 Old Chapman Street, Greensboro, NC, 27403.
Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel has the honor of assisting the Butler Family.
