Born in Hudson, NC, on October 13, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Charles Astor Craig, Sr. and Annie Amanda Shell Craig. A graduate of Hudson High School and Evans Business College in Concord, NC, she enjoyed her early career in secretarial administration at a law firm in Salisbury and a furniture company in Lenoir. Her most fulfilling job, however, was working with Selective Service (Draft Board), where she helped and encouraged the young men being drafted into service, many who asked her for dates after their return from service! She politely declined, as she was already engaged to the love of her life, who happened to have been her childhood neighbor.
She married that childhood neighbor, Kohn Sherrill, of Hudson, in 1957 and began their married life of 66 years together. After marriage, Bobbie settled into the busy life of being a homemaker, a devoted wife and mother of two sons. After numerous moves around the south, they settled in Greensboro in 1972. Bobbie was an amazing cook and baker, known for everything from her pies, chocolate pound cakes, and lemon squares to her lightly fried chicken and the most perfectly grilled cheese sandwich! To say the least, she was a perfectionist in all that she did.
She enjoyed playing basketball with her family, and tennis with “the girls”. She was also known for her fashion sense and her love of home decorating – “simple but elegant, and fun” was a good description of Bobbie. She volunteered at her sons’ schools and loved keeping the nursery at Church. As a member of First Lutheran Church in Greensboro, she was very passionate about being a Greeter. With a beautiful smile and a warm hug, she always wanted members and visitors to feel welcomed and appreciated. Her laughter could ignite the room.
Bobbie was predeceased by both of her parents, all of her 9 siblings and their spouses. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Kohn, her sons Greg (Christine) of Herndon, VA and Michael of Pendleton, SC; granddaughters Emily Sherrill of Arlington, VA and Julia Sherrill of California, MD; and her numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is very grateful for the loving care provided by Caring Hands Homehealth for the past several years, particularly Pamela Lockett; for many cherished members of First Lutheran Church; and finally for Hospice Authoracare.
