Burwell Thorne Anthony, 75, died peacefully April 7, 2022. Born July 4th, 1946 in Charlotte, North Carolina as the daughter of Elizabeth Boyd Thorne, of Warrenton, and Samuel Thomas Thorne of Airlie, North Carolina. She graduated in 1964 from Page High School in Greensboro, in 1968 from Randolph Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and in 1990 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Masters in Community Counseling. She spent her professional career devoted to helping others as a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Burwell met her husband of 53 years, Patt Anthony, in middle school. She was very close with her family and deeply valued her faith. She especially enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. Burwell was incredibly active and was always enthusiastic to take on new hobbies and adventures. She was an avid gardener, tennis player, hiker, snow skier, road biker, naturalist, and women’s rights advocate. She coached her children’s soccer teams and was a Girl Scout leader. Burwell was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, The National Society of Colonial Dames of North Carolina, Greensboro Junior League, Wednesday Literary Club, The Debutante Club of Greensboro, Greensboro Garden Club, The Greensboro Cotillion, and The Assembly. Burwell was passionate about making the world a better place. She was relentlessly positive and believed in the intrinsic goodness of people.
Mrs. Anthony is survived by her husband, Frederick Patterson (Patt) Anthony, and children: Robert Thorne Anthony and his wife, Jennifer Pearce Anthony of Fletcher; Boyd Anthony Long and her husband Joshua Forrest Pescud Long, of Roanoke, Virginia; Reeves Anthony Rhoten and her husband Luke Jevon Rhoten, of Greensboro; her sister Agnes Thorne Harvin and her husband George Myrick Harvin, of Henderson; and eight grandchildren, Logan Pearce Anthony, Harper Indianna Anthony, Walker Anderson Long II, of Charlottesville, Virginia, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Burwell Thorne Long, Heath Rose Patterson Long, Isabel Victoria Rhoten of Chicago, Illinois, Lucy Gaines Sprange, and Violet Elizabeth Sprange.
The family would especially like to thank Dolly Rose and Nona Stout, for their wonderful care this last year.
The service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, Thursday, April 28, at 1:30 p.m. The service will also be live streamed on www.fpcgreensboro.org.
