Carl W. Loveday passed away peacefully in Jamestown, North Carolina on January 5, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born on July 24, 1939, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the son of Charles Lionel and Evelyn V. Smith Loveday. Carl’s greatest happiness came from spending time with his family or the thrill of chasing down a compelling news story. He was a dedicated family man and their biggest cheerleader, always celebrating their achievements with pride. Carl loved the outdoors, especially camping in the Adirondacks, where he found peace and adventure.
After graduating from high school in Burlington, Vermont, Carl joined the U.S. Navy where he was a radioman. Morse code, teletype and cryptography was his life for four and half years. While Carl was stationed at Kodiak, Alaska, he volunteered to be a disc jockey at the Kodiak Armed Forces Radio and Television station. Following the Navy Carl began a broadcast news career in 1962 at WIRD radio in Lake Placid, New York. This is where Carl met Marcy; they worked together at WIRD, fell in love and married on December 8, 1962.
Carl had a long and fulfilling career in television and radio lasting from 1962 - 2003. After leaving WIRD, Carl worked as News Director at WHWB radio in Rutland, Vermont, WKYT in Lexington, Kentucky, WPTZ in Plattsburgh, New York and Palmer Cablevision in Naples, Florida. By 1986, he was leading the news operations of WNOG FM 93.5, WNOG AM 1270, and WARO FM 94.5 in Naples. In 1989, he partnered with Naples Daily News columnist John Lunsford to co-host the television interview program Loveday and Lunsford. Later, he co-hosted Loveday and Lytle with Editorial Page Editor Jeff Lytle, a program that aired until December 1996. Carl went to work for the NCH Healthcare System in Naples in 1996 and conducted a weekly television program titled “The Medical Journal” which included weekly videotaping of surgical procedures from 1997-2003. Carl retired from NCH on his 65th birthday.
Carl demonstrated a lifelong commitment to serving others. He was a dedicated member of the Naples North Rotary Club (1984 - 2009) and a proud Paul Harris Fellow. He created an award-winning website for the Rotary Club of Naples North and actively participated in projects ranging from education to environmental conservation. During emergency storm events he volunteered at the Collier County Emergency Management Office broadcasting storm information on the EAS Radio Station for Collier County from 1996 through 2003. During the same period Carl volunteered for the Collier County Elections as Supervisor telecasting results on the County's Government Access Television Station.
Carl is survived by his two sons, Scott Loveday (Lisa) and Eric Loveday (Melissa), four grandchildren, Michelle Boutin (Rob), James Loveday, Morgan Voigt (Tyler), Andrew Loveday, and three great grandchildren, Lucas, Elliot and Ashelyn. Carl is also survived by his brother John Loveday (Darlene) and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marcy Loveday, in November 1995, and his second wife, Bonnie MacKenzie, in June 2005. A private Celebration of Life for immediate family will be held at a later time. Carl will be laid to rest beside Marcy at Naples Memorial Gardens in Naples, Florida.
Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel is honored to serve the Loveday Family.
