Carolyn Williams Hampton, 85, of Greensboro, woke up in the arms of her Lord and Savior early Monday morning, May 17, 2021. The masked isolation of Alzheimer's disease and the COVID pandemic is finally, removed forever. We have to smile, because we know that she now recognizes Jesus face to face. Her life will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 23, 2021, at Christ United Methodist Church. (410 North Holden Road, Greensboro, NC 27410). Her family will receive visitors from 2:00-2:45 in the church parlor prior to the service.
Born at Duke Hospital on July 26, 1935, Carolyn was welcomed as the first child of Staton Pender Williams and Margaret Moyer Williams. She was a faithful Methodist and Duke Blue Devil from the very start. She grew up on Ninth Street in Albemarle, NC, and there, at an early age, learned to truly see, to care, and to reach out to others. Aspiring to be a teacher and help those in need, she graduated from Duke University in 1957 and later earned her M.Ed. from UNC-Greensboro.
A master teacher and reading specialist, Carolyn taught in the Greensboro City School System for over thirty years, mentoring many young teachers along the way. Her passion for literacy, special needs, community service, excellence and excitement in education earned her the recognition of Teacher of the Year. Carolyn genuinely loved her students, and she loved to teach, an attribute that not only her classroom students, but also her children and grandchildren can attest to, "Nana" made reading and learning fun.
As a member of Christ United Methodist Church for over 50 years, she exuberantly served in countless capacities throughout her life, but nearest and dearest to her heart was her work as Chairperson ("Mama Carolyn") of the Refugee Relocation Committee. She and her husband, Bob,( another faithful Methodist and Duke Blue Devil) poured their hearts into the Montagnard Family Rescue as accountant and advocate for the final twenty years of their lives together. "Mama Carolyn" nurtured many children.
"Nana Carolyn" is dearly loved and survived by her three children, Scott Lee (wife, Cindy Lee) of Greensboro, NC, Sandy Deel (husband Larry) of Salem, VA, and Dug Hampton (wife Joanna) of Pearisburg, VA; five grandchildren, Meghan Lee, Samuel Deel, Annaleigh Deel, Nathanael Crum (wife Autumn), and Jason Hampton; great grandson, Harrison Crum; brother, Staton Williams, Jr. (wife Cheryl); nieces, nephews and a world wide family of friends and students who loved her beyond measure.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Bob Hampton.
Through every chapter of her beautiful life, tenacious and abiding love, contagious laughter, a singular sense of color, style and smile, childlike enthusiasm and creativity, and a Jesus-heart that reached out to the needy led and defined her; she will be sorely missed. Holiday shopping, yard sale adventures and treasure hunts will never be quite the same. Seeing a humming bird, a monarch butterfly, a Duke basketball game or even the color purple will ever make us think of Carolyn, and that is as it should be; she poured into all of our hearts.
Her family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to the phenomenal friends and caregivers of the WhiteStone Community, the Christ Church family, and to those at AuthoraCare Collective who assisted in her final days. God bless you all. Although Carolyn dearly loved flowers and beautiful colors, her family requests that in lieu of flowers you continue her legacy of giving and consider donations to Christ United Methodist Church, earmarked for the Montagnard Program.
