

Catharine Dixon Black, 73, of Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away July 25, 2023 at Beacon Place. Cathy was born March 12, 1950 to the late William Denny Dixon and Dorothy Taylor Dixon. She grew up in Vienna, Virginia and graduated from James Madison High School in 1967 and later from the University of Richmond.
In the late 1970’s, Cathy began her commitment to others’ mental health as a volunteer for Women’s Aid at the battered women’s shelter in Greensboro. Cathy was later appointed as the first Victim Advocate of Turning Point, a program of Family and Children’s Service of Greensboro. Cathy then worked as a Victim Advocate with Turning Point in the Police Department where she was highly regarded for her work with both victims and officers.
Cathy entered private practice in 1993 after receiving a master’s degree in community agency counseling from UNCG’s Department of Counselor Education. She was a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and a National Certified Counselor. In 1996, she became a founding partner in Triad Counseling and Clinical Services, PLLC where she served in counseling both individuals and couples. In 2009 her book, Invisible Scars: How to Stop, Change or End Psychological Abuse was published. Cathy was an active member with the Junior League and worked on the Public Affairs Committee. In 2014, Cathy moved to Charlotte, NC where she continued to practice mental health counseling until her retirement in 2020.
Cathy loved her family (especially her grandchildren), her dogs, and her multiple friends. She enjoyed going to see plays, music, decorating for holidays, traveling, pro football, shopping with her daughters, giving gifts, and making memories with the many people she loved.
Cathy is survived by her two daughters, Amanda Kitchen Short of Charlotte, NC and Rebecca Ann Kitchen of Greensboro; grandson, Dixon Connor Short of Charlotte; brother, Rick Dixon (Judy) of Fairfax, Virginia and sons Taylor and Lewis Dixon, and husband Bill Black of Greensboro and his children, Stewart Black, Tricia Black Merrell, Robert Black, and extended family members.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro, NC. Following the service, the family will visit with friends in the Haywood Duke Room of the church.
