Cora “Louise” Wagstaff Steelman Lamb of Greensboro, passed away Tuesday, January 10th, 2023. “GG,” as she was known to her family, was born on June 20, 1919 and was blessed to have been able to walk along this earthly existence for a remarkable, 103 years. Some say, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” For a blessed few, an extra-large portion of both is given, and this was certainly true for our “GG”.
Louise was preceded in death by her mother, Allie Grissom Wagstaff; her father, Hal Vester Wagstaff; all seven of her siblings; her husband, Swannie Paul Steelman; and their only son, Stephen Paul Steelman.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Carol Steelman of Raleigh; two grandsons, Paul Steelman (Jennifer) of Kinston and Rodney Steelman (Leah) of Rolesville; and five great-grandchildren.
She was a fiercely independent and capable lady who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her. She was a charter member of Rolling Roads Baptist Church and was very active in the church until she was unable to attend. She also retired from Southern Bell after 50 years of employment. Even after her 100th birthday, all who knew and loved her, were amazed at her sharp mind and willing body. In her younger years, she was an avid bowler, with a collection of trophies her loved ones would marvel at. For most of her silver years, she loved spending time with her dear friends, and abided by a steady regimen of daily calisthenics and walks.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to her dearest friends, Betty Byrd and Pat and Ricky Willets for their many years of love and care. They would also like to thank her loving Caregiver, Janice Jacobs for all of her exceptional care and the staff at Clapps Nursing Center in Pleasant Garden for their attentiveness in her final days.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 1:00 PM Hanes- Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407 with Pastor James Jordan officiating. The family will receive friends and loved ones, one hour prior to the funeral service from 12:00 until 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Louise will be laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC at a later date.
