

David Allen Russell, 85, a resident of Harmony Retirement Community, Greensboro passed away at his residence on Thursday January 2, 2025 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born March 21, 1939 in Marion, VA, the son of the late William Garfield Russell and Rena Kate Harrington Russell.
David attended King College in Bristol, TN where he played college basketball on scholarship. He transferred and received his B.S. Degree in Business Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was a manager with Burlington Industries before retiring. David was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy where he was a Lieutenant and served as an Aviation Navigator.
David served as a Deacon in Raeford Presbyterian Church (NC), First Presbyterian Church of Monticello (AR), Halifax Presbyterian Church (VA), and as an Elder in Clarksville Presbyterian Church (VA). He loved reading his bible, poetry and all outdoor activities such as deer hunting, gardening, fishing, playing a mean game of tennis, and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was a devoted dog owner and loved them all, even the strays his daughters brought home. He will be missed by his family always.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty French Russell of the home; two daughters, Jennifer Russell Bates (David) of Greensboro; Sara Russell Sweet (Kin) of Suwanee, GA; one brother, William “Buddy” Bryant Russell (Nancy) of Johnson City, TN; five grandchildren, Catherine “Catie” Fredrickson (Sheldon), Shayla Bednar (Kevin), Barrington Lee (Sophie), Sullivan Sweet, Emma Whitlock; three great grandchildren, Banks Fredrickson, Ford Fredrickson, Akira Lee; one nephew, William Bryant Russell, Jr. (Cynthia) and one niece, Elizabeth Russell Parker (Joey); and many cousins.
A Celebration of Life Service for David will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 11, 2025 at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel. Military Honors will be accorded by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Immediately following the service, we invite friends and family to a reception at his daughter Jennifer’s home at 3213 Forsyth Drive, Greensboro, NC.
The family thanks immensely the staff and nurses of Harmony of Greensboro, Bayada Care and Hospice AuthoraCare of Greensboro for their love, kindness and dedication to the care and well being of David.
