

Doris Louise Mengel, a loving wife, mother, "Mimi," and "Great Mimi," passed away peacefully on Friday, January 24th surrounded by her family. Born and raised in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, she brought light and joy to all who knew her. During her high school years, Doris was a spirited cheerleader, a reflection of her enthusiasm and warmth that would continue to shine throughout her life.
She married the love of her life, Edward Mengel, and they shared almost 42 years of marriage. Together, they embarked on an extraordinary journey that led them to live in eight different states as they supported his career.
In 1973, they made Greensboro, North Carolina their home, where Doris immersed herself in the community and cultivated deep friendships. A talented and passionate tennis player, she found joy and camaraderie on the court. She also dedicated more than 20 years to volunteering at the Cone Health Gift Shop, a testament to her generous spirit.
A devoted member of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, Doris was a beloved leader of the Almanah group, where she cherished organizing lunches, attending movies, and fostering fellowship. Her faith and kindness inspired those around her.
Above all, Doris treasured time spent with her family. Trips to NC and SC beaches, shopping, family dinners were times when her love and laughter created cherished memories for all. She embraced her roles as "Mimi" and "Great Mimi" with boundless affection and joy.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Keisha and Nicole of Griswold Home Care, whose care and compassion provided comfort and support during her final chapter.
Doris is survived by her loving family, including sons Ted (Bonnie), Tim (Tammi), daughters Jaime Hendricks (Ed), and Beth Milks (Buddy). She was a loving Mimi to grandchildren Jason, Hunter, Tiffany, Lance, Ethan, Parker and Ava and "Great Mimi" to seven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward, parents Howard and Frances Schollenberger and sister Audrey Balthaser.
A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, NC on Saturday February 8 at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The V Foundation, donate.v.org, St. Jude Children's Hospital, stjude.org or Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, guilfordpark.org
Her legacy of love, kindness, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
