William (“Bill”) Marion Brown, Jr., age 78, passed away at his home in Greensboro, NC, on Sunday, December 21, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on July 2, 1947, Bill was defined by unwavering devotion to his family, a notable professional legacy, enduring friendships, and a remarkable strength of spirit.
Bill was the son of William (“Buster”) Brown and Marguerite Brown, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Katherine Magann. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jamie Brown, with whom he shared 36 years, his children, Alexandria Brown and Peter Brown, and his two sisters, Judy Long and Susan Lohin.
Family was central to Bill’s life. He regarded the adoption of his children from Russia, along with his marriage to Jamie, as among his greatest blessings and accomplishments. He was also a grandfather to William Brady Sobin, who brought him immense joy. As a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America, Bill found deep purpose in mentoring young men and helping shape lives grounded in leadership and responsibility. Among his proudest moments was supporting his son on the path to earning the rank of Eagle Scout.
Bill’s education laid the foundation for a distinguished profession. At Princeton High School, he was a varsity athlete in football, basketball, and track, lettering in each sport. After completing his undergraduate studies at West Virginia University in three years and graduating early, Bill earned his DDS from the WVU School of Dentistry and later obtained his MD while completing a residency at Washington Hospital Center.
Over four decades, Bill anchored his career to excellence in patient care. Board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and designated a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry, he spent ten years serving patients across Eastern NC, with offices in Goldsboro, Kinston, and Clinton. He later practiced for 21 years in Greensboro with Campbell, Stroud, & Brown, DDS, PA, followed by nine years in private practice as William Brown, DDS, PA.
Widely respected for leadership and commitment to excellence, Bill was a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and was honored by Moses Cone Health System for service on the Medical Executive Committee. He was also a member of the Fellowship of One Thousand, reflecting significant philanthropic support of United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. For his clinical expertise, he earned a Certificate of Accomplishment in Advanced Live Surgical and Prosthetic Strategies for Long-Term Implant Success through MAP International Seminars.
His commitment to service extended well beyond the US. Internationally, Bill volunteered his professional skills in Honduras, the Dominican Republic, at Christian Medical College Vellore in India, and through humanitarian outreach efforts in Zimbabwe. Locally, he worked with the NC Dental Society to help provide free and low-cost dental care to those in need throughout the greater Triad region, and he was a member of the Greensboro Rotary Club, where he served on various committees.
An active life brought deep renewal through time spent in Blowing Rock, where a home at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club became a place of rest and reflection. Some of his most treasured memories were made there, including hiking Grandfather Mountain and trips to Tweetsie Railroad with his children as they were growing up, then years later returning to share those same traditions with his grandson. He enjoyed tennis, skiing, and physical fitness, pursuits that reflected his discipline and determination. In particular, he took great comfort in walking his canine companions, who remained at his side until the final moments. Above all, Bill was known for his lasting friendships and had an extraordinary gift for connection, maintaining meaningful relationships throughout every stage of his life. His circle was vast, and he cherished it deeply.
For 18 years, Bill fought cancer with remarkable courage, strength, and resolve. His resilience and perseverance were defining qualities, often remarked upon by all who knew him. Over the course of that journey, his desire to be present for his family became his greatest motivation: setting small and frequent goals as benchmarks to reach, such as living to see his children’s graduations and celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. He savored each new moment with those he loved while facing his health challenges with grit, grace, and steadfast will.
A funeral service will be held on January 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, 617 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401. The family will receive friends at Starmount Country Club for brunch following the service. In lieu of flowers, Bill requested that donations be made in his memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
In every pursuit, Bill was guided by unconditional love and abundant generosity. Though he is deeply missed, the impact of his life continues through the family he adored, the community he served, and the many people who were fortunate to know him.
