A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 18, 2016, at Saint Pius the Tenth Catholic Church. Entombment with Military Honors will follow at Guilford Memorial Park in the Mausoleum.
Edmund was born October 16, 1922, in Alamance County, NC, the son of Lebanese immigrants: the late William Naoum Koury and Victoria Koury. He attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary and graduated from Burlington High School as the Student Council president. Edmund attended NC State University and was a member of the ROTC. During WWII he was drafted into the US Army Infantry Division, where he attained the rank of Captain and fought bravely in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war ended, Edmund returned home and completed his education at NC State University, obtaining his Bachelor of Science Degree in Textile Management. Post graduation, Edmund moved on to assist his father in the family business, Koury’s Dress Shop, in Burlington. He later joined his brother, Joseph, as an officer with Kirkman and Koury, Inc., which ultimately became Koury Corporation. Edmund was responsible for operating the company’s Multi-Family Division. After Joseph’s passing, Edmund stepped into the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors and remained active until recent months.
Edmund was a gentleman in the truest sense. He was a very generous man who quietly shared his means with others without seeking acknowledgement for doing so. He was very devoted to his Catholic faith and had an immense love for his family. Edmund will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor, and for being a humble and modest man who enriched the lives of all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Koury was preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Koury Salloum and his brother, Joseph Stephen Koury. He is survived by his sisters, Josephine Koury Zoghby of Mobile, AL and Delores Koury Mack of Mooresville, NC. He was a loving uncle to nineteen nieces and nephews and a great uncle to numerous great nieces and nephews, all of whom he thought of as his own.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Blumenthal Rehabilitation Center, Affordable Family Care, and Piedmont Home Care for their assistance in caring for Edmund during the past few months.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, January 17, 2016, at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Springs Prayer Center, 477 Grogan Road, Stoneville, NC 27408, Saint Pius the Tenth Catholic Church, 2210 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27408 or to St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 109 West Smith Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
