Edmund Joseph Tucker, 89, passed away in his home in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. He was born in Manhattan, New York, on November 3, 1935, to William and Catherine Tucker, Irish immigrants who traveled to America with the goal of giving their children unlimited opportunities.
Edmund graduated as valedictorian from Bishop Laughlin (all scholarship) Catholic High School in Brooklyn, New York, and went on to attend the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Economics.
After working for some time in Buffalo, New York, Ed returned to Rahway, NJ, to care for his parents after his father sustained a debilitating injury during his work as a railroad engineer. During this time, Edmund made the decision to attend law school at Seton Hall University at night while working a full-time job to help care for his parents. After graduating from law school, he went on to have a decorated career as First Assistant Prosecutor of Union County, NJ, serving under and alongside a beloved friend, John Stamler. The two served for three five-year terms, from 1977 to 1991.
Upon retirement from the prosecutor’s office, he went on to represent CNA Insurance Company as in-house counsel, handling cases and settlements. At the age of 70, he decided to retire and move to North Carolina with his beloved wife, Rita, to be near his cherished daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons. Ed enjoyed his retirement with his wife as they spent time together with family, watching their grandsons play baseball and various other sports, attending school events, going on family vacations, and simply enjoying the company of those they loved — which was always Edmund’s priority.
In his free time, he enjoyed horse racing, watching all sports on television, and attending baseball games from time to time. He also loved going out to dinner with his wife at their favorite restaurants and taking their annual trip to Jupiter, Florida, where they would spend time with extended family.
Edmund will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, fierce loyalty, and unwavering, deep love and devotion to his family, friends, and anyone he came into contact with.
He was a devout Catholic and a faithful parishioner of both Immaculate Heart of Mary and Pennyburn, where his faith guided his life and gave him strength, joy, and comfort.
Edmund is predeceased by his beloved wife, Rita; his parents, William and Catherine Tucker; his sister, Maureen Crue; and his brothers, William Tucker and Kevin Tucker.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved daughter, Emily Cecilio, and son-in-law, Chris Cecilio; his grandsons, Brandon Cecilio and his fiancée, Reilly Hooper, and Ryan Cecilio; his brother, John Tucker, and sister-in-law, Gail Tucker; his sister, Kathleen Cadigan, and brother-in-law, William Cadigan; and sister-in-law, Judith Tucker.
He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Kevin Tucker, Sheila Gruman, William Tucker, Kelly Strucke, Frank Crue, Billy Crue, Dennis Crue, Edmund Tucker, Brian Tucker, Kathy Tucker, Christine Boyle, Kevin Tucker, Jennifer Cadigan Wulffleff, and William Cadigan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with Father Baiju Paul, OSFS, officiating. Interment with Military Honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
