

Edsel Lee Haney, 96, passed away March 22, 2024. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be at 11 am, Saturday, April 13 at Westminster Gardens Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel in Greensboro, NC with interment to follow. Visitation will begin immediately after interment.
Ed was born in the Charlottesville, VA area to the late Benjamin and Carrie Haney. He was one of nine children and grew up on the family farm. He then entered the US Navy in 1942 and served as a hospital apprentice. He was honorably discharged in 1946, then was recalled to service in 1951 for the Korean conflict. After serving in the Navy, he attended college at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in social science with a minor in psychology. He became the district supervisor of the Virginia Department of Vocational Rehabilitation where he worked in the hospital setting assisting with the rehabilitation of the physically and mentally impaired. Ed returned to university where he earned his Master of Science in public health administration at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He then became a health planner and associate director in the State of NC Health Planning Division of Plans and Operations. He retired in 1991.
During his entire adult life, Ed was always encouraging and mentoring others to get an education and to become the most they could be. He consistently helped others to recognize their potential and nudged them towards realizing that potential.
Ed was a supportive and caring husband and partner of 62 years to the late Mary Frances Martin Haney and a loving father to their daughter Karen. He and Frances were rarely apart and loved to travel and share new experiences. Ed often commented that he lived a good life and a fulfilling life.
In addition to his parents and wife, Ed was preceded in death by his brothers, Cecil, Ralph, Dale and Winifred Haney and his sisters, Ruth Beam, Elva Haney and Madge Marucci. His daughter, Karen and husband Fred Patrick of Brown Summit; grandchildren Jason Patrick and partner Silvia Cabellos, Ian Patrick and wife Erin and great grandchildren Uriah and Stevie, and Nicole Kwong and husband Chi and great grandchildren Lux and Clover and Ed's brother, Benji Haney will cherish his memory.
