

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Guilford College United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. Entombment will follow at Westminster Gardens Mausoleum.
Edwin was born in Guilford County to the late Edwin Harrison Blackwell, Sr. and Lois Cleary Blackwell. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1950. Edwin played football for three years under the leadership of Coach Bob Jameson and then played another three years under the leadership of Coach Stewart Maynard at Guilford College. While attending Guilford College he met the love of his life Marjorie Hayes while she was attending Greensboro College. During his years at Guilford College he attended Naval Officer training for two summers in California. He transferred to High Point College, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Science. At the age of eighteen he joined the Naval Reserves and was commissioned Navy Ensign in 1955. His first tour of duty was on blimp NAS Glenco, in Brunswick, GA. Other tours of duty were Operational Transport Aircraft at Memphis NAS, Glenview, IL, Norfolk NAS, P2 V Neptune Submarine Hunters at Jacksonville NAS, and Willow Grove, NAS. His last tour of duty was Commanding Officer of The Naval Reserve Center in Miami, Fl. He retired in 1976 and moved back to Greensboro in 1977 and worked for Guilford County as a Child Support Enforcement Officer. Edwin was also involved in Civil Air Patrol, Air Harbor in Greensboro, Association United States Navy, Military Officers Assoc. of America, and the American Legion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Hayes Blackwell; a granddaughter, Sarah Angel; and a son-in-law Rickey Angel.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Edwin Harrison Blackwell, III, William Scott Blackwell, Marjorie Lynn Angel, Steven Mark Blackwell and his wife Mary Sue, and David Todd Blackwell and his wife Kristin; grandchildren, Valerie Angel Woolen and her husband Thomas, Lauren Angel, Karli Blackwell, Shelby Blackwell, Cory Blackwell, Madeleine Blackwell, Elizabeth Blackwell, and Haley Kiser; and great-granddaughter, Eva Sanchez.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening, July 2, 2014 at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm St. Chapel.
