

There will be a Celebration of Life Service at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, 2600 Pisgah Church Road, Greensboro, NC, at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023, and a reception in Mt. Pisgah’s Fellowship Hall immediately afterwards.
Ellen was born in Norfolk, VA, and was the oldest child of Daniel Bruce Makinson and Mary Dalton Allen. Ellen grew up in the Hampton Roads area, then moved to Georgia when she was young. Ellen was a graduate of Briarcliff High School and Georgia State University, both in Atlanta, GA. A longtime member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, Ellen was in the Covenant Group, and had served on numerous committees, as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, and as a Boy Scout leader. She also enjoyed her work as a pre-school teacher at Baylake Pines Private School in Virginia Beach.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lois McGinnis, her brother Bruce Makinson, and by her son, Andrew Clayton Underwood.
She is survived by her sisters Kathryn Ambrose and her husband Roy Ambrose of Keysville, VA, Jane Deloatch and her husband Michael Deloatch and their family of Vinton, VA, her children Stephanie Underwood Eaton and Stephanie’s husband Joe Eaton of Greensboro, NC, Matthew Daniel Underwood and Matt’s wife Michele Nolan of Wilmington, NC, and John Alexander Underwood of Homer, AK, and her grandchildren Hailey Laws and Hailey’s husband Justin Laws of Monroe, WI, Stephen Michael Roberts of Greensboro, NC, and Andi Nicole Underwood of Greensboro, NC, and her great-grandchildren Tristen Laws, Maya Laws, Ashton Laws and Ezra Laws of Monroe, WI.
Ellen’s family wants to extend its thanks to the friendly staff at AuthoraCare and at Heartland Skilled Nursing Facility who helped make her comfortable in her last days. We also want to thank Virginia Fristoe and Jamie Hopkins who stayed with Ellen at night, and Sue Eaker and Ginger Pfister, who coordinated all of the assistance from Mt. Pisgah.
