Mrs. Evelyn Geneva Phelps, daughter of the late Hardie Elmer and Bertha Sue Crite, was born on July 11, 1941, in Guilford County. She entered eternal rest on Friday, October 31, 2025. Evelyn attended Brown Summit High School and, following graduation, dedicated herself to her role as a devoted homemaker. Known affectionately as Evelyn to some and “Mom” to others, she left a lasting impression on all whose lives she touched.
Mrs. Phelps was a compassionate and gentle individual who took great pride in her 65-year marriage to James (Peter Gun) Phelps and in raising their (7) seven children. As an active mother and respected member of her community, she warmly welcomed neighborhood children into her home, where they enjoyed her cooking, baking, and nurturing spirit. Her appreciation for beauty was evident in her love for her flowers and creating joyful memories for her family, whether through outdoor play or picnics in the backyard. She preferred to remain in the background, consistently supporting her family’s endeavors.
Her generosity extended to preparing special Sunday dinners for her church community, and caring for her grown children with dedication, always ready to aid with any need. At the first sign of sickness Mrs. Phelps would grab her “Black Medicine Bag” and be on her way to the rescue. She took pride in preparing quality meals and expressed her standards candidly (just ask Vera). Her warm smile brought comfort to those around her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, James (Peter Gun) Phelps of Reidsville, NC; her (7) seven children: James Douglas Phelps of New Jersey, Vivian Koontz (Ken) of Greensboro, NC, Vera Phelps of Greensboro, NC, Vincent Phelps (Sherry) of Greensboro, NC, Denise Wadlington (Jerome) of Greensboro, NC, Mary Phelps of Greensboro, NC, and Christina Phelps of Greensboro, NC; (20) twenty grandchildren; (33) thirty-three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Walter Phelps of Reidsville, NC.
Mrs. Phelps's legacy will thrive through her family and loved ones. She will be remembered as a matriarch whose passing represents a profound loss for all who knew her. It is hard to lose a mother and even harder to lose a GOOD mother!!
