Francis Arthur “Terry” Brooks, 84, passed away on July 6 surrounded by his family. He was born on September 9, 1939 in Greensboro, NC to the late Francis A. Brooks, Jr. and Virginia Baerreis Brooks.
He graduated from N.C. State University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Terry became the owner and President of Brooks Lumber Company at an early age after the death of his father. He ran the company for 42 years until his retirement. Brooks Lumber Company was founded in 1895 and was one of the oldest family businesses in Greensboro. It became well known for its work in the areas of general contracting, specialized millwork, and building products.
Terry is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Martha “Jo” Brooks; son, Tim Brooks; daughter, Ashley Brooks (Lee Whitley) of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Chris Reckard (Emily), Brooks Reckard, Virginia Brooks, Caroline Levesque (Ty); great grandson, Cyrus Reckard; sister, Joan Sullivan; brother in-law, Tom Odom (Donna) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Enjoying the beach occupied much of his leisure time. He loved having all the family together at Wrightsville and other beaches. He and Jo also spent many weekends at Wrightsville Beach on their boat named “The Woodstock” in reference to both of their businesses. They made many lifelong friends on the docks.
After giving up boating, Jo finally convinced Terry to expand his travels and they enjoyed trips to Europe including France, Italy, Spain and the Greek Isles accompanied by good friends. These trips were mostly on small cruise ships because Terry did not like the idea of having to pack and unpack.
Until his mid 70’s, Terry spent early mornings before work at the fitness center at GCC. Everyone thought he must have a key because he was the first one there in the morning.
Terry was known for his dry wit and his gregarious personality. He loved his family and friends and they loved him and will miss him. Terry also valued his relationship with God and believed strongly in prayer.
A memorial service will be held on Friday July 26 at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm St., Greensboro, NC. A private committal will take place prior to the memorial and a reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to The Women’s Resource Center of Greensboro, 628 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
