

Garland was born in Lee County, North Carolina, on January 6, 1950, the elder son of Monroe S. Campbell Sr. and Thelma K. Campbell. The family moved to Greensboro when Garland was a young boy. Garland’s father owned and operated Monroe’s, a popular drive-in restaurant. Garland was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his younger brother, Monroe Campbell Jr.
Garland graduated from Page High School in 1968. He was an excellent student as well as a starter on the Page football team his senior season. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated with a degree in accounting in 1972. He became a licensed CPA and practiced accounting and tax consultation in Atlanta, Georgia and later Naples, Florida. In addition to his business clients, Garland served the Naples community by voluntarily keeping the books for a local nonprofit in the cultural arts.
Garland suffered a massive stroke in 2018 that left him partially paralyzed and ended his career. He moved back to Greensboro in 2021 to be closer to friends and family. He will be remembered for his keen intellect, irreverent wit, and adventurous spirit.
