Glenn Ray Johnson, 86, of Greensboro, passed peacefully at home with family on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. Ray was born on February 6, 1939 to the late Weldon Alexander Johnson and Hessie Loftis Barber. He is survived by his companion of 33 years, Ama Cadle; daughter, Marlene Allen and husband Craig; daughter, Rachel Martin and husband Jim; grandson, Daniel Martin and wife Emma; grandson, Joshua Martin; great grandson Peter Martin; sister, Betty Horton. He was preceded in death by brothers Van Alan Johnson and George Thomas Barber, Jr.
The love and dedication that he had for his family was undeniable. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was most proud of his grandsons Daniel and Josh. He never missed a soccer, football, or baseball game. He was their biggest fan.
Ray proudly served his country as SSgt in the U.S. Air Force. He first joined the Army at age 17, then went into the Air Force. His favorite station was in Greenland. Ray shared fond memories of the time that he served. He also served in the Army Reserves and National Guard. Ray retired in 1994 as a firefighter from the City of Greensboro Fire Department, serving bravely for 30 years. He loved big, always doing for others, even when you may not have realized it. As a reflection of his service to our country and community he lived his life helping others.
He loved sports, with his favorite being the Indianapolis 500. He especially enjoyed football. His favorite team was Florida State. Ray played football in high school and in the army. Ray loved a good cup of coffee, sitting on the porch, visiting, and feeding his birds. He had a love for horses all his life. His hobby was working on cars, where you could always find him tinkering with them and customizing them to his liking.
Ray will always be remembered for a good joke, sharp wit, and storytelling.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to AuthoraCare Hospice, especially Mary, Ray's nurse, who was helpful and supportive during Ray's last days with his family.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, April 4, 2025 at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm Chapel to share in a time of fellowship and storytelling.
