A memorial service will be held at Greensboro’s First Presbyterian Church Saturday, July 30 at 2 pm.
Mrs. Folley, affectionately known as “Hap,” moved to Well Spring with the late Alwin Folley shortly after it was established. Her marriage to Alwin in 1991 brought Hap a special happiness during the years they were together.
Throughout Hap’s 19-year stay at Well Spring she enjoyed forays to the mountains and beach, concerts, lectures, book and herb groups, while volunteering at Well Spring and the Greensboro Historical Museum. Hap drew strength from her family and friends, as well as from the exceptional Well Spring staff.
Harriet was born in Queens, New York to the late Richard and Margaret Lewis McIntyre. A few years after her mother’s untimely death, she moved with her older sister Margaret, her father Richard, and her step-mother Eleanore Ide McIntyre, to Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Hap and her sister grew very close to their step-mother who lived to age 93.
Hap grew up in the Manhattan suburb, attended the public schools there, and upon graduation from Smith College in 1942 married Robert “Bob” Hensler Koenig while he was serving in the Army Air Force.
At the end of World War II she and Bob settled in Glen Ridge. She volunteered for the Newark, NJ Junior League and served on the Glen Ridge Board of Education, eventually becoming its president.
In 1974, Bob was transferred to Greensboro by Western Electric Co. When Bob retired Hap and he returned to New Jersey, spending nine years at the shore in Beach Haven. They returned to Greensboro in 1988 where Bob died the following year.
Hap leaves a son, Peter, a daughter, Barbara, a step-son, Jock, a step-daughter, Dana, two grandchildren, Tom and Meg, four step-grandchildren, Laura, Jonathan, Meredith and Sarah, a daughter-in-law, Sheila, and a step-daughter-in-law, Lynn.
Memorials may be made to Well Spring Retirement Community Benevolent Fund, 4100 Well Spring Drive, Greensboro, NC 27410, or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave, Greensboro NC 27405.
