

Mrs. Nelson was born November 3, 1917 in Lincoln, Maine the daughter of Etta Budge and Milledge Harmon Boyce, Sr. She was married to Sheldon Samuel Nelson who preceded her in death on May 2, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Viola B. Stoup, Wynona B. Kelshaw, Luella B. Dicker and two brothers, Harmon Boyce and Milledge H. Boyce, Jr.
Mrs. Nelson was a longtime member of First Church of the Nazarene in Greensboro. She served many leadership positions of the church and was very supportive of church missions. She was a retired Federal Employee of 30 years consisting of World War II Civil Service with the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C. and the Internal Revenue Service in Greensboro, NC. Irene was one of the Greatest Generation.
She is survived by two daughters, Esther Phelps and husband Woody, Leta Pegram and husband Raymond D. both of Greensboro; one son, Sheldon Glenn Nelson and wife Sandy of Riverside, CA; two sisters, Dorothea B. Round and husband David of Enfield ME, Bernice B. Kinney of Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren, Dennis Phelps, Jr., Patrick Phelps and wife Virginia, Sheldon G. Nelson, Jr. and wife Julie, Jonathan Nelson; seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel conducted by the Reverend Lynn Riddle. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
