

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Blair Hagan room of the church.
Jim was born in 1939 in Gastonia NC to the late Harry Giles, Sr. and Lillian Shirley Giles. He grew up in Gastonia where he graduated from Ashley High School in1958.
A proud 1962 graduate of Davidson College, he majored in English and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He served as a lieutenant in the 8th Army in Ascom, Korea in 1963-1964 as a Signal Officer. He taught English and American literature at Missouri Military Academy for several years.
In 1965 he married Marilyn Wiggins from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
After returning to North Carolina, he earned a Master’s in Business Administration degree from UNC-G and became a Certified Public Accountant. He worked for 20 years at Blue Bell. Inc. in Administration and Corporate accounting. Later, he was Controller and Treasurer for Greensboro Auto Auction for about 15 years.
Jim was a member of the American Society of Certified Public Accountants as well as a number of local business and fraternal organizations. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where was a Sunday school teacher and was active on several church committees.
During retirement, he enjoyed activities at his farm in Rockingham County, as well as spending time with family and especially the grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilyn W. Giles of the home; two sons, James, Jr (Jay) and wife Catrin and grandchildren Lillian Michelle and James, III from Kernersville; and W. Graham and wife Cindy and grandson Joseph of Summerfield; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry (Mac) Giles and his wife Barbara of Greensboro; and Larry Giles and wife Dean of Atlanta. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
The family expresses their thankfulness to Dr. Hal Stoneking, Dr. Lauetta Odogwu and all the staff at Moses Cone Cancer Center; Terese Bacon, Hospice nurse, and all the staff of Beacon Place and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.
