James Earl “Shorty” Gunter, 95, passed away on Friday, October 26, 2018. He was born on October 5, 1923 in Guilford County, the son of James Earl and Vera Stanton Gunter. He proudly served his country in the Army Air Corp. during WW II. Following his military service, he drove cross country for Bowman Transportation until his retirement.
Shorty was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many. He will be deeply missed.
Shorty was preceded in death by his loving wife, Louise Gunter; siblings, Rose Ellen, Violet, Fern, Betty Jean, Marie, Mary Etta, and Norman. Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Lewis Withers and wife Eloise Withers, Lois Price; grandchildren, Natalie Yeagley (Jack), Leslie Painter (Dan Dalrymple), Jim Withers; great grandchildren, Alannah Withers, John Paul Yeagley III, and Ben Yeagley (Lauren).
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, 11:00 am at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with Dr. Jack Benzenhafer officiating. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park with full military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
