

Mr. James Thomas McMichael, 85, passed away Wednesday, after a very brief illness at Wesley Long Hospital. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 18, 2010, in the First Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, 617 N. Elm St., Greensboro, NC. The family will welcome friends in the Virginia Gilmer Room following the service.
Jim was a native of Cordova, Alabama, the son of Violus and Pauline McMichael. He graduated from Auburn University with a degree in electrical engineering. While at Auburn he also ran cross country track. Following graduation, he was selected to attend The Rensselaer Institute of Technology where he received his advanced degree in electronic engineering. He served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed with AT&T Long Lines for 40 years and traveled extensively working in their national security engineering offices.
His smile was infectious. His concern and compassion for others was evidenced by his role as a Mason, his volunteer work with The Greensboro Shepherd Center, his participation in the Young Men’s Bible Class at the First Presbyterian Church, and his service as an Elder, also in the Presbyterian Church. Jim was an avid supporter of Auburn University and especially proud and vocal about his Auburn Tigers.
Jim was a member of the Greensboro branch of the English - Speaking Union, and along with his wife and family, enjoyed a variety of musical concerts, picnics in the park, and amateur photography. He was an avid supporter of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Greensboro Historical Museum, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the North Carolina Museum of History.
Jim is survived by his wife Marilyn Cotten-McMichael; stepson, Fred Cotten; stepdaughter, Karen C. Beam, husband Nolan, and their son, Mac.
