Don grew up in Garner, NC. Anyone who had the opportunity to meet Don knew he never met a stranger. This held true when he first met his wife Patricia (Pat) at Johnny’s drive in restaurant. Don and his brothers were in the car next to Pat and her friends. Pat and Don later ran into each other at the North Carolina State Fair, where he convinced her to let him drive her home so she could stay longer at the fair with him. Don and Pat were married February 10, 1962. He passed just before their 64th anniversary, and his 86th birthday.
Don and Pat went on to have two children, James Kirkland Sanderford “Jimmie,” and Melissa Ann Sanderford.
Don served in the National Guard before receiving honorable discharge. He worked for Pet Incorporated for 22 years as a Division Manager. After retirement, he and Pat moved from Cary, NC to North Myrtle Beach, SC. In 2025, he moved to Greensboro, NC to be closer to family.
Don spent many years walking Crescent Beach meeting as many people as he could, making friends with lifeguards, and telling anyone who would listen who they needed to vote for. His family often joked he should run for President and he was affectionately known as “the Mayor” in his assisted living facility.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Melissa and brothers, Dan and Larry.
Don is survived by his wife, Pat, son James, and sister Judy (Ricky), as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on February 4th, 2026 at 2pm at The Arboretum at Heritage Greens, 801 Meadowood Street, Greensboro, NC 27409.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Horry County Fire and Rescue in Conway, SC. Hanes-LIneberry N. Elm chapel is assisting the family.
