A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Guilford Memorial Park.
Barry was a native of Guilford County, the son of Kenneth Morgan and Edna Daniel Cates. He was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church. Barry was an avid golfer and excelled at the sport. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War where he earned two Purple Hearts, the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. Barry was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Kenneth Daniel Cates.
Mr. Cates is survived by his sister, Janet Cates Upton and husband, Harry of Sherrills Ford, niece, Kimberly McCracken and husband, Charles of Greensboro, nephew, Brent Hunter Watts and wife, Gail of Warrington, VA and 5 great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel.
