Jane was born in Mebane, North Carolina on May 26, 1926, the daughter of Janie Abbitt Winstead and Lewis Daniel Winstead. However, she considered herself to be a Roxboro, North Carolina girl. She took great pride in “being” from Roxboro and Person County, North Carolina. She was the oldest of five siblings and the matriarch of her extended family. She was preceded in death by her life partner and husband, Arthur M. Winstead, “Dad” and her beloved daughter Jane Carol Winstead, “Jan”. Arthur and John both believe those three are now reunited.
Jane’s passion was being a “lifelong” nurse. After graduating from the Medical College of Virginia, she became and worked as a Registered Nurse until starting her family. She retired as a practicing nurse and later became a real estate agent for a number of years. Her passion for caring and nursing others was never lost. She was relentless in caring for Dad and Jan in the late years of their lives. As well, she nursed a number of family members and many friends with that same care and compassion.
There was no subject in which Jane would not enter the conversation and if needed, debate. She loved to share stories and was more than willing to share her opinion. Politics and business were particular topics of great interest to her to discuss and gather more education to benefit her knowledge for the next discussion. She was a faithful member and servant at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church. She loved Guilford Park, its members and the fellowship it brought to her throughout her 65 years of membership.
Jane’s survivors include her brother, Issac (Butch) A. Winstead and his wife, Hilda, of Roxboro, NC; her sons, Arthur M. Winstead, Jr. and his wife Mary Brennan Winstead, of Greensboro, NC and John A. Winstead and his wife Nancy Hickling Winstead of Fairfield, CT. She is also survived by five grandchildren that she cherished and loved to talk to and learn everything they were doing: Erick Winstead and his wife Kelly Dando Winstead of West Chester, PA, Jack Winstead of San Diego, CA, Maggie Winstead of Boston, MA, Mollie Winstead of Raleigh, NC and Emma Winstead of Greensboro, NC. Jane, as well as Arthur and John, consider Mary and Bill Hickling of Greensboro, NC, and their sons, their spouses and their children to be part of the family. Jane would tell you, “Mary Hickling is my best friend and Bill is my personal doctor”.
Arthur and John would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the Guilford Medical Associates and Dr. Mark Perini and ALL of the Care Givers with 1st Choice Home Service that took care of their mother, Jane over many a number of years and the last five months.
