

Janice was the eleventh of twelve children, born November 10, 1936 in Elm City, North Carolina. She attended the North Carolina School of the Deaf and after graduating, met the love of her life, husband Herbert Lee Capes who also attended the NCSD. The two married in 1958. Together, they raised four beautiful children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert in 2011.
Janice lived a bountiful life as a woman of faith, a member of First Baptist Church in Greensboro and the Gerald Small Sunday School Class, as well as the Women’s Missionary Union. She was an active member of the Piedmont Association of the Deaf and Davidson County Association of the Deaf. Janice is remembered as a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a beloved friend to many. She enjoyed gardening, volunteering, celebrating and hosting events. Most of all, Janice was remembered for serving her family with unconditional love and care.
Janice is survived by her sister, Faye; her four children, Rose Shown, Lori Kittle (Jeff), June Gleason (Chris), and Barry Capes (Kelli); eight grandchildren, Ethan (Shannon), Emily (Alan), Ellie (Robert), Dustin (Joella), Connor, Dillon, Seth, Ashlea; eight great-grandchildren, with a ninth on the way; a host of nieces and nephews; Lois Knox who was like a sister; cousins and her canine rescue, Macy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Sallie Beaman; siblings, Ruby, Edwin, Leora, Laura, Lula, Dorothy, Geneva, Arthur, Jean, and Shirley.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407. Burial will immediately follow in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and loved ones one hour prior to the funeral services, from 1:00 until 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to, Communication Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (CSDHH) a non-profit organization in Greensboro.
