
Jean Griffith Wall was a deeply loved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, colleague and volunteer who will be missed and remembered with great affection, admiration and respect by all who knew her. She died peacefully and with great dignity on November 4, 2016.
Jean lived all her life as a North Carolina resident. She was born on September 19, 1926 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to Vera McLean Griffith and John Wilson Griffith. Jean graduated from Meredith College in 1946 where she majored in Chemistry and Biology, and lettered as an athlete in tennis, basketball and field hockey for all four years. An avid debater in high school, Jean met Percy Wall at a debate competition. They were married for more than 60 years until Percy’s death in 2013. Jean and Percy moved to Greensboro after he finished law school at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Jean went to work as a chemist at Vick Chemical Company. During her tenure at Vick Chemical, she advocated for equal pay for equal work for women employees. Later, Jean studied child development at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro where she earned first a Master’s degree and then a doctoral (Ph.D) degree. After completing her graduate work, Jean worked for years at UNC-G advising undergraduate students on academic matters. Jean retired from UNC-G and started the next phase of her life in which she devoted many hours doing volunteer service at the Greensboro Urban Ministry and the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Association, among other non-profit organizations. She continued with her volunteer service right up to the end of her life. Jean was a life-long tennis player, bridge player and a great admirer of Eleanor Roosevelt.
Jean is survived by her children John Allen Wall and Anne Wall McIntosh; her sister Susan Beliczky; her brother John Griffith; her granddaughters Averette Lee McIntosh, Sara Ligon McIntosh, Vera Miao Qin Wall and Emma Joy Yuzheng Wall; her daughter-in-law Janice Carol Cody and her son-in-law William McIntosh.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in honor of Jean may be made to the Greensboro Urban Ministry, 305 West Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro, NC 27406; Gateway Education Center, 3205 East Wendover Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405; or Beacon Place Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2502 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
A Memorial Committal service will be 1:00 PM this Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the Columbarium of the First Presbyterian Church off of Fisher Park Circle.
