Skip was born on April 28, 1933 in Greensboro, NC to the late Ray Warren and Christine Baughn Warren.
He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Business Administration and a law degree in 1957.
He married Nancy Louise Harris in 1957 and they had just recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on February 16, 2025.
After graduating law school, Skip found his calling working for the City Attorney’s Office in 1957 and was appointed as City Attorney in 1961. During his 41 years of service, Skip helped navigate the February 1st, 1960 Woolworth’s Lunch Counter sit in. This incident turned out to be most significant in breaking down racial barriers. He was fair and progressive in his policies in the continued civil rights movements that followed.
In his many years as a civil servant, he was awarded the Ernest H. Ball Distinguished Award, President of the North Carolina Municipal Attorneys Association, Vice President of the International Municipal Lawyers Association, State Chairman of I.M.L.A., Board of Directors of N.C. League of Municipalities, Chairman of Greensboro ABC Board, and was inducted into the United States Supreme Court.
Skip was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC. He served as President of the Young Men’s Bible Class, and he always looked forward to telling a joke at the beginning of the service.
Most importantly, Skip loved spending time with his family. Beach trips to Surfside Beach and later North Myrtle Beach, provided many spirited games of hangman in the sand, card games on the deck, board games around the kitchen table, tennis matches and walks to the pier.
The grandkids loved his jokes, card games and basketball challenges. He was a sports enthusiast, especially UNC-Chapel Hill football and basketball, along with golf, and tennis. Skip began his mornings with a cup of coffee, News and Record, USA Today, and enjoyed doing the crossword puzzles. Jigsaw puzzles were enjoyed by him and his grandchildren. Music was a love of his and his Baughn shuffle stole the show on the dance floor. He and Nancy loved to travel and go to dinner and a movie. His rose garden was fragrant and beautiful and provided fresh flowers for the table.
Skip was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Christine Warren, his bother Jim Warren, his sister Mary Wycoff, and his daughter Cynthia Weaver. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy, daughters Abby Taylor and Crisa Marder and husband Michael, nephew Chip Harris and daughter Imaly as well as his grandchildren, Chase Weaver, and wife Stephani, Gracie Weaver and husband Kevin, Liz Weaver, Gates McClain and his wife Viviana, Lanier McClain and her husband Zack, Ellis Marder and his wife Christie, Madison Marder, Jeffrey Marder and wife Gabi, David Marder and great grandchildren, Ryan, Aiden, Louis, Cristiano, Nancy, Waylon, Mariana, Lucas, Santiago, Victoria, and Michael.
