
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 7, 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church. Following the service, the family will receive guests in the Virginia Gilmer Room.
Jessie Macon was the daughter of Oscar L. Sapp, Jr., and Jessie Macon Sapp; she arrived in Greensboro at seven weeks of age. Her family joined First Baptist Church, and she attended the Greensboro Public Schools, graduating from Greensboro (Grimsley) Senior High School, Class of 1947. She attended Meredith College and Women’s College (now UNCG).
On March 27, 1954, she married Greensboro attorney Elton Edwards, and they had two children: Elton Thornton Edwards, Jr., of Greensboro (and husband Julian P. Cheek, Jr.), and Ruth Macon Edwards (and husband Jon Winston Hines); their children are Jennifer Rhea Hines and Jon Michael Hines; the Hines family resides in Sandy, Utah.
The Edwards family joined First Presbyterian Church and were very active members.
Jessie Macon supported the Greensboro Public Library and conducted a fund-raising drive to benefit the genealogical collection. She was active with the Greensboro Historical Museum; she served on its Board and as President of the Historical Museum Guild 2005-2007. She was a former member of the Guilford Battle Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was a Charter member of the Earl of Shaftesbury Chapter, Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century, in which she held many offices. She was also a member of The Forum, Daughters of American Colonists, the Huguenot Society, Order of Descendants of Ancient Planters, the Jamestown Society, the Historical Book Club of North Carolina, and the Sir Walter Raleigh Cabinet (for spouses of North Carolina legislators and other officials).
