Joanne grew up in Canton, OH, and attended Central Catholic High School. She participated in high school drama productions such as South Pacific. After graduating high school, Joanne attended Kent State University and was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She spent her college summers working multiple jobs, one of which consisted of working third shift developing photos. When she wasn’t working, she was spending time at the beach and even made the local newspaper with a portrait of her as the “Beauty on the Beach”.
In 1964, Joanne received her Bachelor of Art Education from Kent State University. After getting married, Joanne and her husband Al, purchased a home in Delaware, OH where she taught elementary art education. In 1982 the family moved to Greensboro, NC, where Joanne lived until her death.
During Joanne’s life in Greensboro, she spent time dedicated to raising her children and working several jobs until finally committing to work for the Internal Revenue Service. She served in her government role for over 20 years. Joanne worked for several years educating the public and independent business owners on how to properly file their taxes. One of her favorite positions with the IRS allowed her to travel overseas to American military bases and teach the soldiers how to file their taxes. She had many adventures during her travels, such as attending a camel wrestling tournament with locals in Turkey, visiting the Azores Islands, and getting called into the General’s office for starting a fire in her room on base when she left her wet socks to dry on the heater.
Joanne was an adventure seeker and wasn’t afraid to travel anywhere or try new experiences, but she was also a dedicated Catholic. She prayed the rosary weekly with her prayer group and traveled to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia with her son to visit and pray at the site of Mary’s apparitions. Joanne was a member of St. Pius X Church since 1982. She reflected a passion for the Catholic faith through her prayers, dedication to reading the bible, and raising her children in the faith.
When Joanne wasn’t working or traveling, she tended to her garden. Joanne had a love for flowers and nature. Her backyard was always a calming oasis of birds, flowers, and peace. Joanne was an artist. Her favorite forms of art included oil paintings of the places she traveled and original stained glass projects. Joanne also cherished spending time with family and her grandchildren. Joanne will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
