Joe Ann Fleming

Joe Ann Patterson Fleming passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022 at her home in Greensboro, NC. She was the daughter of the late Mabel Byrd Patterson and Thomas Julian Patterson. Joe Ann was predeceased by her sister, Peggy Johnson and her brothers, Thomas Julian Patterson, Jr., and James Bradford “Buddy” Patterson.

Joe Ann was born on March 24, 1936 in Harnett County, attended public schools in Sanford, NC and graduated from Sanford Central High School in 1954. After graduation, Joe Ann enrolled in the Highsmith School of Nursing in Fayetteville, NC. She graduated in 1957, passed the state board, and was married to Edwin Michael Fleming of Franklinton, NC, her husband of 65 years.

Joe Ann began her nursing career at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC followed by Beaufort County Hospital, and Lenoir County Hospital. The family moved to Greensboro, NC in 1965, where she was employed by the Guilford County Health Department for 30 years and retired in 1996 from a supervisory position.

Once retired, Joe Ann and Ed were free to travel. Coast to coast motor trips covered 47 lower states and 23 National Parks. Other trips included Alaska, Canada, and Central America. Joe Ann was a devoted and faithful member of Jamestown United Methodist Church. She and Ed attended the Austin P. Fortney Sunday School Class, where they made lifelong friends.

Joe Ann is survived by her husband, Edwin Michael Fleming and their three children, Bonnie Fleming of Greensboro, NC, Edwin Michael Fleming, Jr. (Carol) of Randleman, NC, and Christopher Thomas Fleming (Lisa) of Pleasant Garden, NC. Grandchildren, Rebeca Fleming Rice (Michael), Thomas Britton Fleming (Allie), Kelly Elisabeth Fleming, Leigh Ann Fleming; and a new great granddaughter, Elizabeth Lane “Lizzie” Fleming. Joe Ann is also survived by her sister, Julia Patterson Love of Florence, SC, and many nieces and nephews.

One of Joe Ann’s greatest pleasures was following and supporting the various activities of her grandchildren. She was so proud of them and their accomplishments. Her kind and caring nature will be remembered by her family and many dear friends.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Jamestown United Methodist Church, 403 East Main Street, Jamestown, NC., followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. Masks are encouraged.
