He was born September 27, 1932, in Lebanon, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Louis and Louise Hobson Shoun, and his sisters Joanna Shoun Davenport and Edna Shoun Palmer.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Neva Karraker Shoun; son John Shoun Jr. (Carol) of Durham, N.C.; daughter Lissa Shoun (Eric Bong) of San Jose, Calif.; son Andrew Shoun (Laura) of Greenville, S.C.; son Brian Shoun (Jill) of Peachtree City, Ga.; daughter Amy Yinger (Bill) of Wake Forest, N.C.; son Hobson Shoun of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and by his siblings Linda Shoun and Paul Shoun.
John was devoted to his family and his faith. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. During his long career in the textile industry, the family lived in seven cities across six states. In each new community, the enduring constant was deep involvement in the local church, where John served in many roles, as deacon, elder, teacher, preacher, and friend.
Throughout his life, he was known for his warm disposition, good humor, and ever-present smile.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 14, at 2 p.m. in the May-Foley Chapel, 3801 Wade Coble Drive, in the Twin Lakes Community. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately afterward in the adjacent Pepper Tree Café.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Twin Lakes Auxiliary.
