A lifelong resident in Greensboro, Joe was the beloved son of Iris Wilson and Joseph P. Marus. He was a proud member of the first graduating class of Grimsley Senior High and continued his education at NC State University and graduated from Guilford College. Following graduation, Joe served his country honorably in the U.S. Army.
Joe dedicated his entire career to Marus Marble and Tile Company, a family business founded by his father in 1946. Beginning in the construction department, he steadily worked his way up to become the company’s president and owner, a role he held with pride until his passing. Under Joe’s leadership, Marus Marble and Tile contributed to significant projects, including the Norfolk VA tunnel and prominent local landmarks like the International Civil Rights Museum of Greensboro, Greensboro’s O’ Henry Hotel, Green Valley Grill, and Print Works Bistro. His commitment to the business was unwavering, and he spent time at his office seven days a week, unless away on the rare vacation.
While his vacations were infrequent, when Joe did take time off, his vibrant and outgoing spirit shone through. He especially cherished time near the water, but nothing brought him more joy than visiting his children and grandchildren, sharing precious moments that would become lasting memories.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Laine Iris Marus Crowe.
He is survived by his devoted wife Sherry Williams Marus; his son, J.J. Marus and his wife Leslie of Greensboro; son-in-law Brian T. Crowe, Jr. of Andover, MA.; grandchildren, Henley Maie Crowe, Reid Thomas Crowe, Mac, Lily, and Violet Marus. He is also survived by his sister, Meredith Ferrara and her husband Anthony of West Palm Beach, FL.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2024, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at the Greensboro Country Club, 410 Sunset Dr., Greensboro, NC 24008. Friends and family are invited to share memories and honor his legacy.
