Julian Latelle Greenwood, Jr. "Jerry"

Mr. Julian Latelle Greenwood Jr., “Jerry”, 78, of Wilmington, NC, passed away peacefully Wednesday June 7, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 1, 1944, in Richmond, VA. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1968 with a degree in political science followed immediately by officer candidate school in the US Army. He dutifully served as a counterintelligence officer in Vietnam where he was promoted to Captain and awarded the Bronze Star. Just prior to leaving for Vietnam he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart Lawson. Following his tour in Vietnam, Jerry joined the US Secret Service where his distinguished career of nearly three decades carried him and Lawson to various cities in the southeast. They eventually landed in Wilmington, NC where he would stay for over forty years and retire.

Jerry would be quick to say his greatest accomplishments in life involved his family. He and Lawson spent their retirement immersed in the lives of their three children and ten grandchildren. From spending hot weeks in a tent at Camp Raven Knob with Boy Scouts, to touring nearly all the US National Parks with his older grandchildren, to planning cousins’ camp and the traditional third grade trips, he loved the adventure and never missed a single opportunity. Jerry played a uniquely special role in the lives of his youngest three grandchildren as they lived just three doors down. Although his time with his youngest grandchildren may have been short, it was equally as rich.

Jerry’s second home was his church. He and Lawson have been members of Winter Park Baptist Church for over 40 years, where he was best known for his eagerness to serve others. Whether it was on one of the many trips to New Orleans following Katrina, or a local commitment to support refugees, mission work was Jerry’s passion.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Margaret Greenwood of Richmond, VA. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 55 years Lawson Greenwood, sister Judy Jacobs of Richmond, VA, sons Jody Greenwood (Traci), Todd Greenwood (Gabby), Michael Greenwood (Pepper), granddaughters Julie Sarrelangue (Arturo), Kayla Lynch (Zac), Emily Greenwood (fiancé Tony), Alexa Dameron (David), grandsons Matthew Greenwood, Carter Greenwood, Landon Greenwood, Isaac Greenwood, Grey Greenwood, and Ollie Greenwood.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made in Jerry’s memory to Authora Care (Hospice) of Greensboro. A very special thanks to Lindsay Medaloni who's loving care of Jerry in his final days will never be forgotten. Lastly, the family wishes to acknowledge Michelle Taylor with Novant Health Cancer Institute whose compassionate guidance from beginning to end will always be cherished.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Winter Park Baptist Church, 4700 Wrightsville Ave, Wilmington, NC 28403.
