Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Proverbs 31:28. And so it was with Katheryn Arnold Ray who went to be with the Lord on November 18, 2016. She was a woman of unshakeable faith, a supportive wife and steady and guiding hand to three sons.
“Kat”, as she was known to family and friends, was born in Wythe County, VA to the late Hobert and Fannie Dean Arnold. She was raised in the Church of God of Prophecy in VA where she attended school and continued her membership in the church when she resided in Greensboro. She met her husband by accident, literally. As she was standing in the yard of a family friend, he drove by in his nice car. She noticed the car but Fletcher “Jack” noticed her and ran off the road. On April 27, 1956 they were married and have shared a wonderful life. Her gift of compassion and selflessness towards others made her an excellent caregiver as a CNA during her career with Wesley Long Hospital from 1978 – 1986. After retirement she and Jack spent a brief time in Boone but found their home to truly be in Greensboro and returned in 1991.
Her tender heart, sweet laugh and captivating smile endeared her to everyone she met. Her family and career kept her very busy but when she found time to relax she enjoyed crocheting, needle point and sewing. She not only kept a beautiful home, garden and yard but managed to work away from home and with the help of the Lord and Jack raised three sons, Jack “Jackie” Ray of Greensboro, Randy “Rink” Ray and wife Mary of Boston, MA and Eric H. Ray of Greensboro. Her family delighted her heart and she especially loved Christmas season surrounded by the love of her family and the joy of her grandchildren, Ryan, Davis and wife Ally, Jessica, Tia and Josh. She loved her siblings, Damie Covey and husband Doug and Donna Sprinkle of Greensboro; and treasured her numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her siblings, Homer, Hensel, Fred, Bert, and Cleo and husband, Woody. Bert’s wife, Jeannie of Nebraska survives.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 PM at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield chapel. Kat will be interred in Guilford Memorial Park following a service at 11 AM at the funeral home officiated by Reverend Trevor Reid on Tuesday, November 21.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Church of God of Prophecy 4104 Short Farm Road, Greensboro, NC 27406 or The Church of God of Prophecy, Route 3 Highway 613, Gunton Park Road, Max Meadows, Virginia 24360.
