A native of Greensboro, N.C., and Grimsley High School graduate, Bird Dog served in the Army before settling down with the love of his life, Susan Matthews, in Jamestown, N.C. Larry and Susan enjoyed 37 years of marriage, during which they never missed an opportunity to spend time with their children, four grandchildren and two granddogs.
Witty and full of life, Larry instilled a love of sports and a strong work ethic in his children Kellie Van Gilder, Michael Dixon and Kristi Sutton. He loved spending time outside, whether that meant playing golf, fishing or simply mowing the grass.
Larry is survived by his loving wife Susan, mother Verna Dixon, three children and their spouses Aaron Van Gilder, Ashley Dixon and Jason Sutton.
Larry was preceded in death by his father William Howard Dixon Sr., brother William Howard Dixon Jr. and son Wayne Allen.
Graveside Services with full Military Honors will be held on Tuesday, 2:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are sent to Brenner Children’s Hospital, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27517.
