On October 20, 2024, Mrs. Mabel Thomas Lloyd passed gently into eternal rest. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services of Greensboro. An 11:00 funeral service will be held on Thursday in the chapel at Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services. Interment will follow at 3:00 at Shallow Well (formerly Christian) Church cemetery in Sanford, NC where she grew up.
Mrs. Mabel Thomas Lloyd was born on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1922 in Lee County, NC to the late Oscar T. and Verlie Pattishall Thomas, and grew up on the family farm. She graduated in 1938 from Broadway High School as valedictorian, and from Sanford Business College, and went on to enjoy a lengthy and rewarding secretarial career and frequent court reporter within the legal profession. The first eleven years of her career were spent as the “Girl Friday” to Teague & Williams, Attorneys at Law, and Superior Court Judge Clawson L. Williams in Sanford, NC, followed by an interlude in the early fifties as a Senate Aide to Senator Willis Smith in Washington, DC. The final years of her career were spent with Smith, Sapp, Moore & Smith, Attorneys at Law in Greensboro, NC, from which she retired in 1954 to be a stay-at-home mom. After retirement, she often assisted Mrs. Cheek, the Federal Court reporter.
On December 1, 1951, in a simple home ceremony, Mrs. Lloyd became the bride of William H. Lloyd (Bill), her lifelong “best beau” and husband of 40 years until his death in 1991. They subsequently moved to Greensboro, NC where they established their home and raised their family.
Mrs. Lloyd was an active and dedicated member of Florida Street Baptist Church for many years, where she served as a member of the sanctuary choir and of the Joy Belles Singer and Ringers hand bell choirs, as well as various other capacities within the church.
Mrs. Lloyd was actively involved in Cub Scouting, spending several years as the adored Den Mother of Den No. 2 Pack 309, Boy Scouts of America. She was also briefly associated with Girl Scouts.
She let the boys of the neighborhood know that they could always find a welcome place to play in “Mama Lloyd’s” spacious backyard. Those little friends of yesteryear became her lifelong adult friends.
Mrs. Lloyd is survived by a daughter, Andrea L. Moore of Greensboro, NC; sons, Scott Lloyd of Liberty, NC, Edward Lloyd (Tamara) of Sparta, NC, and Donald Lloyd of the home; grandsons, John Moore (Kim) and Matthew Phillips; granddaughter, Misty Lloyd; great-grandchildren, Kristin Lloyd, Ezra Phillips and Emily Moore; brothers-in-law, Earl Warren (Brenda) and Jerry Warren (Annette); sister-in-law, Janet Warren; a special grand-niece, Karen Hiott; and those special young adult friends who so enriched her last years. She loved much and was loved much. She will be missed.
Flowers are welcomed or contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
