Margaret Sue "Sue" Lee (née Bell), age 93, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, at home with her family in Greensboro, North Carolina. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Sue lived a life marked by quiet strength, enduring love, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Born on December 20, 1931, in Asheville, North Carolina, Sue was the daughter of Frank and Ruth Bell. She grew up surrounded by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the values that would guide her throughout her life. She pursued higher education at the Women's College of Greensboro (now known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) where she earned a bachelor's degree in biology. Her academic accomplishments reflected her keen intellect and deep curiosity about the world.
Sue went on to work as a medical technologist for many years, balancing a demanding professional life with an enduring commitment to her family. Her daughters often reflect with awe on how she managed to work full days while still preparing home cooked meals every night and being present for the important moments in their lives. Her ability to nurture and support those around her was nothing short of remarkable.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Ernest Lee; her parents; and her siblings Helen, Frank, and Alice. Their memory remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Sue is survived by her loving children, Amy and Susan; and her cherished grandchildren: Susan (Raul), Alexis, Jackson, and Rachael, sisters in law Sara Stokes, Janey Lee and Elizabeth Beazley and numerous deeply loved nieces and nephews. Her legacy lives on through their values, their memories, and the traditions she lovingly passed down.
A lifelong creator, Sue’s talents were as abundant as they were heartfelt. She could sew anything, from bedspreads and curtains to handmade clothes for her children when they were young. Her knitting needles were rarely still; she crafted countless baby blankets for friends and family alike. Her embroidery adorned pillows, wall hangings with exquisite designs, and whimsical patterns to frame.
Sue also had a gift for baking, especially during the holidays when she would prepare plates of Christmas treats for all the neighbors. Her kitchen was a place of warmth and joy. A voracious reader throughout her life, she found solace and inspiration in books. She also delighted in collecting teapots, angels, and pottery, each piece a reflection of her appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship. She never missed a Carolina basketball game or an Atlanta Braves game on tv and knew every player on each year’s team. She also loved classical music and was a member of the Greensboro Symphony Guild every season.
Faith was central to Sue’s life. Since the late 1960s, she and her family have been members of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. Through decades of service, including mission trips abroad, Sue exemplified a life lived with purpose. She embroidered baptismal announcements for many babies welcomed into the church community. She volunteered tirelessly in the church library, participated in Bible study groups and women’s circles, attended book clubs and weekly worship services, helped feed the homeless through “Hot Dish and Hope,” and gave generously of her time volunteering for the Urban Ministry.
Her gentle spirit touched everyone who knew her, not through grand gestures but through small acts filled with grace: a plate of cookies delivered with care, a book thoughtfully recommended; a handmade blanket wrapped around a newborn child. She was humble in demeanor, kind without condition, and steadfast without fail.
Her love enveloped not just her immediate family but extended across generations, covering them even now in memory. Her presence was a quiet force that shaped lives through consistency, compassion, and care.
The family would like to thank all of those who helped with her care these last few months, special thanks to Authoracare, Teresa Lea, First Presbyterian Church members and pastoral care for your generous compassion.
A memorial service celebrating Sue’s life will be held on November 8, 2025, at 01:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church 617 N. Elm Street.
