
Margaret Ann Fletcher McIntosh, 70, died peacefully at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 after a brief illness. Mrs. McIntosh, affectionately known throughout her life as "Margi," was born on September 19, 1946, the daughter of Lester L. Fletcher and his wife Abigail Fletcher Grant in Teaneck, N.J.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Lloyd McIntosh; her children, Melissa McIntosh Flanagan, and her husband, Michael Thomas Flanagan of Dothan, Ala. and Robert Fletcher McIntosh and his wife, Craig Hassenfelt McIntosh of Greensboro, N.C.; and her sister-in-law, Barbara May Fletcher of Virginia Beach, Va. Mrs. McIntosh is also survived by her six grandchildren, Michael Thomas Flanagan, Jr., Mary MacAuley Flanagan, Macauley Margaret Flanagan, Adelaide Fortune McIntosh, Robert Fletcher McIntosh, Jr. and Stephen Alexander McIntosh.
Mrs. McIntosh was predeceased by her parents and by her brother, Scott Cummings Fletcher. Mrs. McIntosh was raised in the town of Tenafly, N.J. and was a 1964 graduate of the Dwight School for Girls, now known as the Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, N.J. She was also a graduate of Colby Junior College, now known as Colby-Sawyer College with an associate’s degree in 1966. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Religion from the University of Denver in 1969.
Margi spent her summers growing up on Lake Winnipesaukee with her family at their house in Wolfeboro, N.H. It was at this lake, that she would meet her husband of 45 years. Wolfeboro was also special to her as a place where she would forge a lifelong friendship with her best friend and future sister-in-law, Mrs. Fletcher. Her family moved to Virginia Beach, Va. in 1966 and she would make this her permanent residence until 1984.
During her time in Virginia Beach, Mrs. McIntosh was a member of the King’s Daughter Garden Club and the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach. She and her husband were also members of the Princess Anne Country Club and remained members even after they moved from the area. She would return to Virginia Beach often during her adult life and spent summers there with her many friends and enjoyed spending time on the beach at the 47th Street oceanfront.
The McIntosh’s moved to Greensboro, N.C. in 1986 and she remained a resident there for the rest of her life. For a number of years she worked in retail sales of antiques and furniture, but spent most of her time in the home as a loving mother and wife. As a proud grandmother, “Mimi” touched her grandchildren’s lives through her love and affection, as well as her many songs and funny adages.
She will forever be remembered by family and friends for her humor, her generous heart and her kindness. Mrs. McIntosh will be missed dearly by all of those that loved her and those that she loved.
A gathering of friends will be held in the Virginia Gilmer Loyalty Room at First Presbyterian Church, by entering the Greene St. door, in Greensboro, N.C. on Thursday, September 22nd at 6:00 pm.
A service will also be held on Saturday, September 24th at 1:30 pm at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery in Virginia Beach, VA. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service at the Princess Ann Country Club.
