Mrs. Marie Faulkner

A memorial service to celebrate Marie's life will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, October 14, 2012, at Christ United Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC, with the Reverend Susan Norman Vickers officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Interment will be private.

Marie was born in Charlotte on March 27, 1927, to the late Julia Hagood Cuthbertson and William Reynolds Cuthbertson. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte in 1945 and Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, in 1949, where she was an outstanding student and athlete, a member of Mortar Board and President of the Athletic Association.

She was married on January 22, 1954, to the late John Edward Faulkner, Jr. Ed and Marie made their home in Greensboro and enjoyed 54 wonderful years of marriage before Ed's death in August 2008. Marie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as an accomplished golfer and beloved friend to many people. She especially treasured the friendships she shared for more than 50 years with all the ladies of the Daubers Garden Club.

Marie was a lifelong Methodist and a long-time member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she was actively involved for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Worship Work Area, and she served as a Communion steward along with Ed and many other church friends. Marie and Ed particularly enjoyed preparing the Communion elements for the Christmas Eve midnight service at Christ Church.

Marie was also active in numerous charitable, civic and educational organizations in Greensboro including the Children's Home Society, the Greensboro Symphony Guild, the Junior League of Greensboro, Greensboro Day School, the Greensboro Historical Museum, the Historical Book Club of North Carolina, and the Greensboro Mobile Meals program. Marie and Ed were also long-time supporters of the outreach programs of the Children's Trust Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro and the women’s golf scholarship program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She is survived by two sons, John Edward Faulkner, III, of Greensboro, and Reynolds Cuthbertson Faulkner and wife, Mary Ruth Cooke Faulkner of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Kathleen, Julia, Courtney and Matthew Faulkner of Charlotte; sister, Julie Cuthbertson Clarkson of Charlotte and brother, William Reynolds Cuthbertson, Jr. of Charlotte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Christ United Methodist Church, 410 North Holden Road, Greensboro, NC, 27410; or to the Children's Trust Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, 330 South Greene Street, Greensboro, NC, 27401.
