
Mary Rehill Schell passed away in Greensboro, North Carolina at 10:20 a.m. on September 26, 2012. She was born in Teaneck, New Jersey on October 2, 1942 to the late John and Mary Rehill. Mary graduated from Boston College and was an accomplished nurse during her career. After college, she lived in Denver, then New York City. In 1983 she married Braxton Schell, who preceded her in death, and moved to Greensboro.
Mary was a complex and unconventional woman with many passions and interests which made her a friend of countless people, young and old and spanning the globe. She loved the beach and treasured her time there with friends and family. She was an avid fan of women’s soccer, college basketball and football, tennis and golf. She grew to love the University of North Carolina and participated in and enjoyed many UNC cultural and sports activities. Mary had a great appreciation of the arts and traveled widely collecting art and quenching her thirst for exploring other cultures. She had a quick wit and a dry sense of humor. She loved telling great stories and laughing along with others. She will be missed by many.
Mary is survived by her stepson Braxton Schell, Jr. of Birmingham, AL, and his children, Braxton Schell, III of San Francisco, CA, and Susan Schell of Birmingham, AL; her stepson Richard Schell of Charlotte, NC, and his children, Betsy Schell, Sam Schell and Katherine Schell, all of Charlotte, NC; her brother John Rehill of Merchantsville, NJ; and her sister Anne Cummings of Vero Beach, FL.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to UNC Women’s Soccer, the Braxton Schell Scholarship Fund UNC Law School or your favorite charity. A memorial service celebrating Mary’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC and the family will visit friends afterward in the Blair Hagan Room of the church.
