Matthew Sergio, from a young age, had an eye for beauty and a desire to travel. His earliest recollection was seeing a family member leaving on a ship to Europe and thinking, “I want to do that” and he did. He graduated from Parsons School of Design and his outstanding reputation as an interior designer made him a much sought-after professional in his field and his talents allowed him the opportunity to travel the world to share his prestigious and elegant designs. He served as the head of design for Macy’s in New York City, and was one of the designers for Macy’s at the American House in Moscow in the summer of 1959. He continued his illustrious career as home furnishing coordinator for Burdines in FL. He pioneered Burdines high-end furniture department, making it a must-see destination. He continued his talents in North Carolina, acting as a design consultant where he worked closely with a number of companies, including E.J.Victor, at the High Point Furniture Market.
Matthew was born in New York City to Anthony and Palma who immigrated from Italy to pursue the American dream. Matthew was always curious about the world around him and proved it with bold and progressive designs and his intellectual wit. He was a true gentlemen. He had a heart of gold, giving of his time freely, loyal and loving to his friends and patriarch to his sisters, Sadie, Adeline, Anne and immediate family. To truly know Matthew was to love Matthew.
Matthew is survived by his sister, Ann Mercuri; nieces and nephews, Richard Mercuri, Adrienne Sieni and Claire Mercuri as well as cousin Marion Tatum and numerous other cousins.
A gathering of friends and family will be held Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Chapel.
