

Melvin “Mel” McCord, Jr., 88, passed away Monday, June 17, 2024. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 14, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church in the chapel, 617 North Elm Street. Inurnment will follow the service at the church columbarium.
Mel was born March 11, 1936, in Charleston SC, son of the late Melvin Maurice McCord, Sr. and Ray Sawyer McCord. After graduating from Winyah High School in Georgetown, SC in 1956, he went on to graduate from Kings Business College in Charlotte, NC in 1958. In December of 1966, Mel married the love of his life Peggy. He worked a long career for the City of Charlotte until his retirement.
Mel will be remembered as a kind and gentle man. He loved his wife Peggy, son Maurice and 3 grandchildren (Collin, Kristopher, Liza Grace) as well as their many dogs over the years. Although Mel never drove, there was never anywhere he couldn’t get to on foot. Mel was also an avid collector of comics and collectibles. He was an example of “simple living” in appreciating all that he had in life. Mel will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McCord was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy McCord.
He is survived by his son, Maurice “Mo” McCord, III and wife, Kristi, and 3 grandchildren; his brother, Owen McCord of Georgetown, SC.
