

Michael Joseph Flanagan, 79, died peacefully at Bartram Crossings Assisted Living in Jacksonville, FL, on Friday, September 8, 2017 after a heroic struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Mr. Flanagan was born on February 5, 1938, the son of Michael Lazarus Flanagan and his wife Jane McLaughlin Flanagan in Manhattan, NY.
He is survived by his three children and seven grandchildren, Dr. Michael Thomas Flanagan and his wife Melissa McIntosh Flanagan, and their three children Michael T., Mary Mac, and Macauley, of Dothan, AL; Dr. John Christopher Flanagan and his wife Xenia Flanagan, and their four children Lauren, Alexis, Diana, and Christopher, of Jacksonville, FL; and Janine Marie Flanagan of Charleston, SC. Mr. Flanagan is survived by two step children Doreen Orlando of Palm Coast, FL and Joey Orlando and his wife Renee Orlando, and their two children, Brady and Cole of Palm Coast, FL. He is also survived by his four sisters Mary Theresa Cunningham, Eleanor Suydam, Kathleen Abela Steimle, Noreen Mazzucca, and brother John Flanagan.
Mr. Flanagan was predeceased by his parents, by his wife C. Mary Flanagan, by his second wife Joan Orlando, and by his sister, Elizabeth Ann Manos.
Mr. Flanagan was raised in New York City and he was a graduate of Long Island University. He moved to Greensboro, NC in 1969 to raise his family and work for AT&T. A devout catholic, he was active at St. Pius X Church taking leadership positions on the parish council and as a strong advocate of St. Pius X School. Mr. Flanagan carried his love of sports into coaching basketball and soccer to many Greensboro youth over the years. He retired from AT&T after 40 years of service and eventually moved to Palm Coast, FL. Mr. Flanagan became a 4th degree Knight of Columbus and served as the Grand Knight for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church while living in Palm Coast, FL.
He will forever be remembered by family and friends for his devout faith, kindness, and generous heart. Michael will be missed dearly by all of those that loved him and those he loved.
A funeral liturgy will be held on Tuesday, November 21st at 11:00 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Greensboro, NC. Immediately following the service, the Rite of Committal will occur at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro, NC. The family will receive friends at a reception at the O’Henry Hotel, in Greensboro, NC on Tuesday, November 21st at 1:30 pm following the funeral and graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Office of Development and Alumni affairs, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, PO Box 571021, Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1021.
