Mrs. Smith was born August 30, 1919 in Stokes County, to the late Lizzie and Samuel Stewart. She was one of six children that were raised solely by her mother due to the death of her father during the flu epidemic that year. This resulted in her being named after him and therefore, affectionately being called “Sammye.” She was a faithful member of Walnut Cove Primitive Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Roger Smith to whom she was married for almost 63 years. They were quite the team sharing the same work ethic in all that they did. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Frances Dick and Emma James as well as three brothers, Harvey, John and Joseph Stewart.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children Carey Smith and wife Michele of Meridian, Mississippi and Wanda Clark and husband Jerry of Greensboro, North Carolina. In addition she is survived by her adoring grandchildren, Cristen Hoots and husband Scott of Kernersville, N.C., Dr. Christopher Clark and wife Tracy of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ashlyn Clark of Raleigh, N.C. , three great granddaughters Anna Hoots and Madeleine Hoots of Kernersville, N.C. and Addison Clark of Winston-Salem, NC, In addition she is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, many of whom were very faithful to visit, call and care for her needs.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to her faithful and loving friend and caregiver, Nettie Smith, who quickly became a part of our family for the past four years. Mom loved and looked forward to seeing Nettie every day. There are no words to express our gratitude for her making Mom’s last years without Dad so special. Well done thou good and faithful servant! The family wishes to say a special thanks to the Hospice team who provided comfort, encouragement and support during Mom’s final journey.
She was blessed to have shared her life with loving family, friends and neighbors who checked on her daily, visited, and took care of many daily tasks for her while she was still at home. Sincere gratitude is expressed to her very special friend, Rosie Leggett, who befriended Mom while at Ashton Place, visiting her several times a day.
Nannie and her husband were a great team and shared all the duties of the home. Following her retirement from Cone Mills Revolution Plant after 35 years of service, she quickly learned how to spend her days including caring for her grandchildren and crocheting beautiful baby blankets. Many families were blessed with a gift of a blanket. She and Dad also shared a love for gardening and everyone always marveled at their beautiful and massive garden which she proudly shared with friends and neighbors. She would boast of her harvest every year and always tried to surpass the previous year’s count, exceeding 500 quarts of vegetables one summer. Then there were the “Tarheels”, whom she always looked forward to watching and cheering to victory. She proudly stated to everyone that all three of her grandchildren were “Carolina” graduates.
We feel extremely blessed to have been her children, and while we will miss her so much, we know that she is now at peace and reunited with our very special and loving father.
